Nature-Based Learning
Learning outside has a number of benefits. Our bodies are more inclined to produce dopamine and serotonin outside, which decreases feelings of stress and increases feelings of safety. Students’ experience improved attention and behavior when they have regular opportunities to learn outside, so we encourage it as much as possible. Our teachers have held reading, math, writing, science, and social studies lessons outside. Sometimes the experience includes all the elements you’d find in the classroom. Teachers have built routines with students that allow for quick transitions from inside to outside to support this kind of learning. Sometimes the experience focuses more on incorporating elements of the natural environment into the subject. Either way, students look forward to outdoor learning.
